We just attended the Central Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Conference in Bend, OR. It featured the nations very first training for safety and health professionals involved in the cannabis and marijuana industry. Two days of speakers on a wide range of topics including permitting, lab and lab equipment safety, best practices for safe processing, protecting employees that use pesticides, hazard communication, accident prevention and much more.
Attendance was great and offered a range of participants including Washington Labor & Industries, Oregon OSHA, other regulating agencies, private businesses, and insurance providers all learning more about the industry, and how we can better protect workers. For regulatory purposes, cannabis and marijuana production and processing is a mix of agriculture, industry, and manufacturing. Together we are learning how to create effective plans that protect workers and businesses.
The training was incredible, but what we heard again and again from both enforcement and consulting officials was that cannabis businesses are not meeting their obligations to create a safe workplace. In many instances they are operating with out any safety plans or effective trainings. This is resulting in large fines when they do make inspections, and those inspections are becoming more frequent.
